Dennis Sharp

Dennis Sharp (born November 30, 1933 in England - † May 6, 2010 ) was a British architect , architecture professor, curator , author and editor.

Life

Dennis Sharp studied at the Bedford Modern School (1945-1951), at the Luton School of Art (1951-1954) and 1954-1957 at the AA School of Architecture in London . 1960 to 1963 he was a research assistant at the University of Liverpool.

From 1962 he was a correspondent for the architecture and design magazine Architectural Design (1962–1970) and Architecture North West . From 1967 to 1983 he was the editor of the monthly magazine and other publications of the London AA. Since 1988 he has been the responsible editor of the World Architecture: Journal of the international Academy of Architecture of the International Academy of Architecture in Sofia , Bulgaria, as well as the magazine International Architecture and Construction. Since 2000 he has also been a correspondent for the newspaper L'Architettura, founded by Bruno Zevi , in Rome and London.

Dennis Sharp was professor at the AA School of Architecture in London from 1968 to 1982, and from 1968 to 1972 held the chair for the history of architecture and design. He worked as a visiting professor at many universities: University of Liverpool (1959–1968), University of Manchester (1959–1968), Columbia University in New York (1980), University of Adelaide (1984), Royal University of Malta (1968–1970 ), Helsinki University of Technology (Otaniemi) in Finland (1998), University of Nottingham (1996–1999) and University College London , Royal College of Art , North London Poly , Oxford , Cambridge and University of Sheffield . In 1991 he became a professor at the International Academy of Architecture in Sofia. In 1984 he took part in the international architecture symposium Mensch und Raum ( Men and Space ) at the Vienna University of Technology .

In 1977 Dennis Sharp became director of the International Committee of Architectural Critics ( CICA ). From 1991 to 1993 he was Vice President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and from 1990 to 1999 of the British National Council . In 1992 he was co-founder of the RIBA Architecture Center and its president from 1996 to 1999. Since 1999 he was the British regional representative of DOCOMOMO . In addition, he was one of the jurors of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture since it was founded in 1994.

Sharp has published a large number of books on architecture and all contemporary major architects that have been translated into many languages.
