The Assault of the Present on the Rest of Time (English title The Assault of the Present on the Rest of Time ) is a West German film of 1985. The screenplay was written by Alexander Kluge ; he also directed. The entire film was shot in Frankfurt am Main. The working title of the film was Eeriness of Time . In France, the film is called L'attaque du présent sur le temps qui reste . An alternative English title is The Blind Director .

In this episode film, Kluge tells various stories about the realities of people, media and machines in the course of time. The story of a Polish caretaker family who wants to protect the holdings of a film production from invading Germans is told in episodes. Another episode tells of a blind director who filmed the opera Falstaff with imaginative visual power . Other episodes deal with a doctor who is being replaced by a machine, scenes from a theater performance by Tosca filmed, and silent film sequences copied on top of one another .

Awards

At the 1986 German Film Prize , the film won a “Filmband in Silver” in the category of other full-program films . He was also nominated for the "Filmband in Gold" in the category "Outstanding Feature Film" ( Kairos-Film ).

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film - the 28th film by Kluge - the rating of particularly valuable and described it as a "philosophically piercing but also kaleidoscopic exciting film".
