The Eyewitness (original title Eyewitness , published in the UK as The Janitor ) is a thriller from 1981. Director and producer was Peter Yates , the screenplay is by Steve Tesich . The leading roles were played by William Hurt , Sigourney Weaver , Christopher Plummer and James Woods . The story brings together a news reporter and a caretaker who get to know each other through a murder case and, as alleged witnesses, end up in mortal danger.

The New York janitor Daryll Deever finds a murdered Vietnamese businessman in one of the offices of the building at the end of his shift. This was suspected of criminal connections. When Deever leaves the building after being questioned by the police, he notices TV news reporter Tony Sokolov among the journalists hoping for news there. Since he is an avid fan of her, he takes the chance and speaks to her. To pique their interest, he suggests they know more about the murder.

She is chasing him for information about what Daryll is allowing. A game of cat and mouse unfolds. This convinces the real killer that Daryll has real information about the killer, and so Daryll and Tony get their lives in danger.

The film was shot in New York City. The protagonist is the caretaker in the Metropolitan Life North Building . The multi-storey horse stable in which the showdown was filmed is also located in the metropolis. It was part of a riding school, The Claremont Riding Academy , from 1927 to 2007 . The basement, ground floor and first floor are connected by ramps. The shooting for the equestrian scene, in which Daryll and Tony get closer, took place in Central Park .

In the United States and Canada, the film grossed $ 6.4 million at the box office .
