Tod am Altar is a German television film by Walter Bannert from 1996 based on a script by Claus Peter Hant . It is the 5th episode of the crime series Der Bulle von Tölz with Ottfried Fischer as the main actor in the role of Chief Inspector Benno Berghammer. It was first broadcast on February 18, 1996 on Sat.1 .

action

Pastor Martin Petermeier collapses during Sunday mass and dies. Dr. Riccarda Inninger, the priest's family doctor, told Commissioner Benno Berghammer that the priest had an asthma attack before the service ; his heart probably no longer went along with it.

In the rectory, Berghammer meets Iris, a young drug addict whose five-year-old daughter Theresa has been taken into care by the “Lichtwerk”, a Catholic institution. Iris calls them a sect , while the pastor's cook Maria Moser considers these people to be decent - strictly Catholic and blessed by the Pope .

The autopsy shows that Pastor Petermeier was poisoned. In search of a motive, the inspectors Benno Berghammer and Sabrina Lorenz find out from Director Dr. Max Römelin that an internal investigation was carried out at the school because the pastor allegedly raped the 13-year-old student Eva. Meanwhile, the pastor's cook finds a farewell letter from the girl, whereupon the commissioners rush to the church, where they find Eva, poisoned with pills, unconscious and just in time to call an emergency doctor. At a later interrogation, Eva admits that she only made up the rape because the pastor ignored it. She wanted to take the story back, but the director forbade her.

On behalf of the bishop , Prelate Hinter is looking in Pastor Petermeier's files for documents that could help him put a stop to the light work, but these cannot be found.

Berghammer learns from the kindergarten teacher at the Lichtwerk that Sophia, the head of the Lichtwerk, foresaw the pastor's death in every detail. While he is waiting to be admitted to her, he meets Iris, who asks him to get her and her daughter out of there. However, Sophia's survey does not provide any new information.

The inspector found two photos in the pastor's wallet: one of Kati Römelin, the headmaster's wife, and one of Dr. Riccarda Inninger, which turns out to be sisters. When asked about her personal dedication in the photo, Dr. Inninger said she met Petermeier three years ago in an asthma clinic in Innsbruck ; the pastor had psychological seizures, and she herself had a cat allergy.

When the investigation stalled, Benno Berghammer asked his colleague to infiltrate the Lichtwerk to investigate undercover and to help Iris.

The bishop goes to the head of the lightworks and asks Pastor Petermeier to hand over the diary, but Sophia refuses and throws him out. Inspector Lorenz overhears the conversation and appropriates the diary by causing a power outage and thus breaking into Sophia's office unnoticed. Colleague Berghammer is waiting for them in his car in front of the light works. The reading reveals that Pastor Petermeier had a relationship with Kati Römelin, who is expecting a child from him. In addition, the lightworks has the bishop in hand, because he is also the father of a child.

During an interview, Director Römelin admits that he knew about his wife's relationship with the pastor; He also admits the graffiti on the church wall, but he does not claim to have committed the murder; He claims to have been home at the time of the crime. He gives his wife as a witness for his alibi; However, it moved out and disappeared after emptying its accounts.

Next, Berghammer and Lorenz drive to Waging am See , where the pastor caused an accident and hit-and-run early on the day of the murder. In the pizzeria, they find out where Petermeier and Kati Römelin had their love nest, and there they find the remains of their shared meal.

Benno Berghammer hands the pastor's diary to the bishop so that he can put a stop to the light work without being susceptible to blackmail any longer. Through the intervention of the bishop at the youth welfare office, Iris and her daughter finally escape the clutches of the sect.

When the search for Ms. Römelin was successful, the commissioners arrested her, although she asserted that she had no reason for the murder; the pastor is after all the father of their child. The investigators were in doubt because the poison could have been administered not only orally but also by inhalation. The latter would work immediately, whereas oral intake can take up to eight hours. When going through the people with a motive, Benno Berghammer discovers that Dr. Riccarda Inninger behaved most inconspicuously. When the doctor follows the summons to the police station, he shows her the personal items that the pastor last carried with him. Sabrina Lorenz comes into the office with a cat in her arms, whereupon Dr. Inninger panics and has an asthma attack. She refuses Pastor Petermeier's spray that Berghammer offers her, which proves to the inspector that she is responsible for the poisoning. After inhaling her own spray and getting the seizure under control, she confesses that she did it for her sister because Petermeier ruined Kati's life.
