action
Differences from the book
The film has some fundamental differences to the novel Conan Doyles. What is particularly striking is the fact that Sherlock Holmes only reappears the night Sir Henry was attacked by the dog in the moor. In the novel , Holmes actively steps into the action even before Selden is killed by the dog. Beryl and Sir Henry also meet secretly that night in the courtyard of Merripit House . In the novel, they openly invite Sir Henry to dinner.
- Further changes
- Dr. Watson has nothing against common tobacco smoke, as shown in this film; In the novel, Watson comes to Baker Street in the evening and has to cough once because of the thick air, otherwise not because Watson himself was a smoker.
- The dog does not come to Sir Henry's room one night for him to see, nor do Watson and Sir Henry see the dog one day on the moor.
- Watson is alone when he first meets the Stapletons.
- The village of Grimpen and the entire moor do not belong to the Baskervilles.
- Holmes, Watson and Mortimer do not go for a walk during the conversation in London during which Holmes learns of the case; it all starts and ends in the Baker Street apartment.
- Selden is not considered innocent in the novel .
- Barrymoore plans to open a pub and not a bike shop.
- Holmes meets Sir Henry for the first time not in the hotel, but on Baker Street.
- Watson isn't upset that Holmes used it; in the film it is already.
- The dog is already shown in the scene in which Sir Charles dies. In total, the dog is shown three times during the film before the showdown in which Sir Henry is attacked (where he actually first appears in the book).
Oddities
Matt Frewer is listed as the movie's first star in the opening credits. Still, Kenneth Welsh (Dr. Watson) has by far the most moments in the film. Even Sir Henry actor Jason London has more minutes than Matt Frewer. Welsh is listed as the last actor in the opening credits.
Sequels
Due to the great success that the film had, Hallmark planned a total of three more films in the following year, all of which were directed by Rodney Gibbons. They are The Sign of Four , A Royal Scandal and The Case of the Whitechapel Vampire .
Awards
The film received the 2001 Gemini Award to Réne April for best costumes.
