action

France in 1944: the war is coming to an end and the American liberators are expected in a small village. The brothers Antoine, Julien and their friend Gaby watch the tanks rolling in and notify their village. However, it is not about the Americans, but about German troops in retreat. The mayor is shot for running to the tanks with the American flag. The village blames the children and all three secretly leave their homes. The brothers want to flee to their mother in Lyon . On the way there, Gaby is caught stealing eggs and taken home. As the brothers continue their journey, a German shepherd joins them. Later, the brothers meet the German soldier Franz. He first threatens them with his rifle. One of the two is supposed to bring him food and wine while he keeps the other hostage. Since Franz has lumbago and no doctor is around, the brothers take him to a healer. The next day, Franz can walk again without pain and the three become friends. The four travelers come to an abandoned village and help themselves in a restaurant. The children are put to sleep and Franz goes into the abandoned apartments to steal money. The next day, Franz goes with the dog to a church and discovers with horror that the Nazis pushed all the villagers into the church and mercilessly murdered them. Franz cries out to God with horror why he didn't do anything about it and is ashamed because he stole from the dead. Just as he is about to return the money to the dead, American soldiers arrive in the village and discover Franz and the dead in the church. They lead Franz and the dog out. There the dog is shot because he bites a soldier in the knee when he grabs Franz by the arm. The brothers look out of the window and just see how Franz is shot by the soldiers. The two brothers cry for Franz and the dog and are brought home by the soldiers.
