The man who makes the stars (original title: L'uomo delle stelle ) is an Italian feature film, made in 1995 under the direction of Giuseppe Tornatore . He tells a crook story from Sicily in the early 1950s.

action

Joe Morelli from Rome drove through Sicily in 1953 in an old delivery van with posters of well-known movie stars pasted. He visits small villages and towns and then sets up a tent on the market square and posts a film camera. Over the loudspeaker, he tells the residents, who are running in droves, that as a talent scout at Universalia Studios in Rome, he is looking for new faces for the film. For a contribution of 1,500 lire to expenses, you can have test shots made and speak a few sentences in front of the camera.

Since many Sicilians live in poverty in the post-war years and are looking for an opportunity to emigrate, it is easy for Morelli to stir up dreams of an acting career, of wealth in Rome or even in the United States. More or less beautiful women, ambitious parents with their children, farm workers, crooks and mafiosi go to Morelli's tent to pose in front of the camera and give rehearsals. They talk about themselves and their lives, their memories and plans.

Morelli spins, listens to the stories and feeds false hopes, because in reality he is a con man with a long criminal record. He's using pre-recorded, unusable footage that will never end up in Rome, he's just after the money. At night, when he takes down his camera and tent to go to the next town, he is amused by the naivete of the Sicilians.

One day the young Beata stands in front of his camera. She is an orphan, lives in a monastery for lack of other options and sees Morelli as the only way to escape her previous life and get to Rome. She adores him, accompanies him and supports him in his filming. At first he is not very enthusiastic, but gradually a love relationship develops between the two.

Just as suddenly as Beata entered Morelli's life, Brigadier Mastropaolo appears. He has seen through Morelli's wrong play and denounces him publicly. At the same time, some mafiosi who were betrayed by Morelli appear. They brutally beat him up and he is jailed for several months, seriously injured. After his release, he goes in search of Beata. He finally finds her in a closed institution. After witnessing how he was exposed as a cheater, she withdrew into her own dream world. She does not recognize him and is hardly approachable. The images and faces of times gone by once again pass Morelli and he sees that he has not only destroyed countless dreams, but also one life.
