Man from Atlantis (alternatively, the man from the sea ) is an American fantasy / science fiction - television series by Mark Harris, the last survivors of Atlantis . Initially, four television films were produced, which were continued with 13 series episodes. Since the increasingly implausible plot led to rapidly falling audience numbers, the series was discontinued after only one season.
It premiered in the US on March 1, 1977 on NBC . ARD broadcast the first eleven episodes in Germany from November 1982 to January 1983 under the title Der Mann aus dem Meer . It was not until September 1988 that the commercial broadcaster RTL Plus showed the series again and, until February 1989, the other nine episodes that had not yet been shown in German premieres. Since then, the series has changed television channels several times.

At dusk, strollers discover an unconscious man on the beach who has apparently washed up. He is taken to the hospital, but the doctors cannot help him. When they have almost given up on the unconscious man, the marine biologist Dr. Elizabeth Merrill about being allowed to examine the unconscious. When she discovers that the unconscious person has no conventional lungs, she comes up with the saving idea of bringing the stranger back into the sea. Once there, the one believed dead awakens to new life.
Mark Harris, as the one found is called, suffers from amnesia and even after his health has recovered, he cannot remember where he comes from and why he is different. It has webbed toes and fingers, can swim faster than a dolphin , has very light-sensitive eyes and develops powers that exceed those of a normal person. However, the forces are dependent on the water and longer stays on land make Mark weak. The basic motif of the series is Mark's search for the truth about his origins, which is never clarified.
The United States government wants to take advantage of Mark's peculiarities and persuades him, along with Dr. Merrill and CW Crawford carry out various assignments. They officially work for an underwater research laboratory with the help of the modern high-tech submarine Cetacean . In doing so, they investigate a whole range of bizarre phenomena, including portals that lead to other dimensions. There are also encounters with a wide variety of sea creatures and aliens.
Often the recurring enemy of the being from Atlantis is the stout millionaire Mr. Schubert, who develops an extraordinary interest in him.

Trivia
The Man from Atlantis was the first US television series to be shown in the People's Republic of China . There it ran from 1980 under the title 大西洋 底 来 的 人 , which translated means “The man from the bottom of the Atlantic ”.
With the series soon being canceled due to low audience ratings , Patrick Duffy was given the chance to film the soap Dallas , which became his biggest hit.
