action

In the spring of 1988 a young married couple - the woman is pregnant - tries to flee across the German-German border. They are caught by a border patrol, the young soldier Stefan Kortmann has to shoot the fugitive on the legs by order of his superior, but he unintentionally kills the man and the woman is seriously injured. - Summer 2005: Kortmann is a senior physician in Hanover and has been in a relationship with his colleague Marie for three years, nobody suspects anything of his past. Tormented by his guilt, he would finally like to travel to the widow on the island of Usedom and express his regret to her. Marie falls from the clouds when Stefan tells her his dark secret. The young cancer patient Paul, who grew up in the children's home and has little chance of survival, does not give up until Stefan takes him with him.

On Usedom, Silke Strehlow, the widow of the shot man, runs a fishing cutter and rents out guest rooms. She has problems with her unruly 17-year-old daughter Sunny. Stefan rents a room with Paul at Silke's, but he can't quite tell her who he is. They both fall in love and sleep together. Paul and Sunny, who knows about his illness, also fall in love. Marie appears on the island, Stefan confesses everything to her, she drives away angrily. Paul overheard the conversation and reproaches Stefan. Silke tells Stefan about her life after trying to escape, about her prison sentence and about the unsuccessful attempt to bring the wall guards to justice. The files have disappeared. Then Stefan finally tells her the truth, Silke throws him out indignantly.

Meanwhile, Sunny has stolen a boat to fulfill Paul's wish to go out to sea for once in his life. This leads to a sexual encounter, shortly afterwards Paul dies in Sunny's arms. Stefan reports himself to the public prosecutor's office because of the wall bullets. In spite of everything, Marie wants to stick with Stefan and tells him that he can hardly be convicted, since it cannot be proven whether his bullets or those of his superior were fatal. Stefan decides to stay on the island and the practice of the village doctor Dr. To take over Breitfeld. However, Silke moves away from Usedom with Sunny. She reveals a secret to her daughter: Sunny's father wanted to break off the flight, Silke persuaded him. Therefore, she feels complicit in his death.

criticism

The Westfälische Anzeiger described the film as an "outstanding television piece". Benno Fürmann and Annika Kuhl manage their roles "with artistic mastery."

For the Frankfurter Rundschau , Der Mauerschützen is a “melodrama worthy of criticism”. The director does not miss "any opportunity for a romantic calendar picture." In the end it looks as if "the film cannot grasp its topic."
