The Godfather of New York (Original title: Boss of Bosses ) is an American television film from 2001 by director Dwight H. Little . In the lead role is Chazz Palminteri as Paul Castellano to see who the boss of the Gambino family rises.

action

The film portrays the career of gangster Paul Castellano. This comes from an Italian-American family from the working class of New York City. Even as a teenager he worked in a gang of thugs that was led by his future brother-in-law and cousin Carlo Gambino . At that time Gambino was still working for the boss Vito Genovese , who noticed Castellano's brutality and intelligence and who promoted his advancement. The plot takes a leap into the mid-1970s: Castellano is one of the candidates for the successor to the aged Carlo Gambino, who is now the head of his own gang. Castellano resides in a splendid villa and makes sure that his children finish school. He appears civilized on the outside, but is still able to gain respect by threatening to use violence. Castellano is named his successor by Gambino, who sees him as a "thinker" and "Big Paul" rises to the position of boss of the Gambino family after his death. At the funeral, the new underboss Dellacroce addresses the problem: Castellano rejects the drug business and focuses on white-collar crime, while the street crews do good business with drugs. Castellano wants to withdraw from the ordinary street crime and take over the construction business. The FBI asks Castellano to withdraw the murder assignment against Joseph Pistone (aka Donnie Brasco ). When Castellano actually takes it back, his gang members interpret it as a weakness. When his gang members continue to deal in drugs behind his back, he decides to crack down on them and calls up the heads of the leading Mafia families (the so-called Five Families ). Little does he know that the FBI has managed to plant bugs around him. In 1985 the FBI gathered enough evidence to indict him and the other family heads in the Mafia Commission Trial . The chief prosecutor was the public prosecutor Rudolph Giuliani . Castellano is released on bail. His anti-drug policy, the impending purge and the danger that he could testify lead to a conspiracy within the Gambino family. The members of Castellano's gang conspire against him under the leadership of John Gotti and finally murder him in December in front of the Sparks Steak House in Manhattan. In addition to the main plot, the film shows Castellano's unhappy love affair with his Latin American housekeeper Gloria. In the credits it is noted that the prosecution was very successful, Gotti was later arrested and Castellano's murder heralded the decline of the Gambino family.
