occupation

Der Schüler Gerber is an Austrian-German feature film from 1981. The film was based on the novel of the same name by Friedrich Torberg .

action

The action takes place in Vienna in the 1920s: Kurt Gerber is a gifted student. His life is made more difficult in the high school year by his new class teacher, Professor Kupfer, among the students because of his autocratic manner God copper is called. The math teacher quickly clashes with precocious Kurt. A private psychological war arises between student and teacher. Kurt's grades in the two subjects taught by Kupfer go downhill. Kurt's father Dr. Albert Gerber, who is constantly putting Kurt under pressure to absolutely pass the Matura, also has a heart condition. The son does not want to burden the life of the seriously ill man unnecessarily with his problems. Kurt is left alone with his school problem. At the same time he falls in love with Lisa, who is the same age, but who doesn't want to know anything about him. The high school diploma is now growing to the climax of the teacher's torment. Kurt believes, as it turns out later, by mistake, that he has not passed the exam and takes his own life before the results are announced.

background

Friedrich Torberg incorporated his own experiences as a student at Austrian and Czech high schools into the book. He failed his Matura once, but passed it a year later on the second attempt.

Reviews

  • Lexicon of international film : a true-to-original film adaptation of a novel published in 1929 that is equally current today. Very sensitive in the portrayal of the main role and the camera work; solid, but staged a bit too smoothly, so that the psychological drama is not fully explored. All in all, however, a considerable examination of an explosive topic.

Awards

In 1981 Werner Kreindl received the German Film Prize in Gold for his performance . The equipment team was also awarded this prize.
