Der Vetter Basilio is a two-part television play by WDR by Wilhelm Semmelroth from 1969 based on the novel Vetter Basilio (1878) by the Portuguese author José Maria Eça de Queiroz .

content

Luiza's cousin Basilio penetrates the tranquil life of the middle class couple Luiza and Jorge in Lisbon. While Jorge, an engineer, is on a business trip, the cousin successfully advertises the cousin and meets with her for a rendezvous in a dump in the old town. After Basilio left for Paris, Luiza wrote him love letters. The oppressed housemaid Juliana gets her hands on some of them. She begins to blackmail her mistress and demands more and more. When Jorge returns, the situation becomes more and more hopeless and Luiza more and more oppressed and suppressed.

criticism

“An epically broad, long-winded, conventional staging that gets lost in details, which cannot be justified either in terms of the material, the design or the only vague social criticism. From 16, no recommendation. "

background

The film was shot in Portugal under adverse conditions, director Semmelroth himself had to step in as an extra several times because the amateur actors did not appear at the location, and set designer Paul Haferung can also be seen in a mini role due to the lack of amateur actors. It was first broadcast on July 3, 1969 (part 1) and July 6, 1969 (part 2) on ARD . The cousin Basilio can be seen as the forerunner of the plush thriller and was also released on DVD.
