action

The young painter Fred and his friend, the folk singer Nicki, attend the performance of a magician in the Vienna Prater . Her assistant Tini piqued her curiosity. So the two young men also learn that the magician blames Tini for the fact that some of his magic tricks fail. Tini is then released by him. For Fred and Nicki it is a point of honor to look after the young woman. Since Nicki himself has an appearance in the Prater, Fred takes care of dissuading Tini from her gloomy thoughts. While they are both strolling across the Prater, they meet Fred's sister Valerie and her boyfriend, Baron Castelli. Fred is not very enthusiastic, he doesn't think much of Castelli, who runs a gambling room with a dubious reputation. Castelli, in turn, is noticeably interested in Tini, much to the annoyance of the jealous Valerie.

It doesn't take long for Tini to move into a small attic room next to Fred's studio. Fred has rent debts because his paintings can't find buyers. His landlady expects him to pay the outstanding rent payments as soon as possible. Otherwise the unregistered subtenant Tini would have to leave the apartment. Tini now wants to ask Fred's sister Valerie for financial help. When she visits Valerie, she gets into an argument between her and Baron Castelli. Valerie accuses the baron of always being interested in other women. Tini now becomes the object of her jealousy and Valerie's pent-up aggressions discharge over the completely surprised young woman. Tini flees and meets Castelli in front of the house, who offers her his help. He knows a lot of influential people and wants to introduce them to someone who is interested in the pictures of their friend Fred. To do this, however, she must be dressed appropriately and so Tini lets him pay for an expensive dress, albeit with a bad feeling. Castelli's attempts to get closer to Tini, however, are unsuccessful, even if Castelli visits numerous bars with her and slowly makes her drunk. When the baron changes location again, the police provide the baron. When he is about to be arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant, he evades arrest by committing suicide.

Fred and Tini do not meet until late in the evening. Fred, who saw Tini in the baron's car, is angry and bitterly reproaches the young woman. In the end he leaves her alone in the dark. Tini sees no meaning in her life without Fred and wants to take her own life in the Danube towards tomorrow. At the last moment she is saved. Meanwhile, Fred has learned the background and knows that Tini did not betray him with the baron. He visits her in the hospital, where there is reconciliation.
