action

On a mountain hike, Tamara makes her husband Patrick promise to stand by her forever. Some time later: The young father Patrick finds Leon, one of his twins, dead in his cot. He desperately tries to resuscitate the baby and then calls the police who will start their investigations. Tamara, the children's mother, remains in the background and is silent. All she says is that the boy screamed and then lay there. However, her husband suspects that she has done something to Leon, as one of the couple's previous children has already died under unexplained circumstances. Tamara tries to jump out of the window and Patrick can stop her. When questioned by the police, Tamara looks confused, so that a suspicion remains. When the young woman speaks to her mother on the phone, it looks like she is about to collapse. After a psychological questioning one cannot rule out that Tamara could harm herself. However, the psychologist recommends not to leave the young mother alone with her young daughter Emily. An autopsy of the dead child shows that outside influences can be ruled out, so that sudden infant death syndrome can be assumed. However, two similar cases within one family appear suspicious.

Ms. Albany, Tamara's mother, is summoned to the police station and describes her daughter as difficult and does not hold back with allegations directed at the daughter. It is also she who initially takes care of little Emily, but does not take very good care of the child. Meanwhile, Patrick and Tamara argue in their home, where Patrick gets violent towards his wife. The investigating chief inspector Charlotte Sänger meanwhile questions a former work colleague about Tamara and learns that she did not have a good position at her workplace. The midwife interviewed describes the young mother as being very clumsy with the babies. A neighbor is questioned at the same time by Sanger's colleague, Chief Inspector Dellwo, and is not particularly affected by the baby's fate. She describes the young couple as a "sad couple". Sabrina, a well-known neighbor of Tamara and Patrick and also a young mother, says that she can well imagine that Tamara is not innocent. She says that Leon often cried and ate little. When Dellwo says goodbye, she asks him to take her a short distance - which surprises him because she leaves her little child alone. Sabrina meets with Patrick in a mall. In her home, Tamara distracts herself a little and receives Charlotte Sänger. During the conversation it becomes clear that Tamara is still mourning her first daughter Lina, but she cannot really tell about it. Charlotte Singer slowly finds a "line" to Tamara and they talk to each other more intensively. In the meantime, Patrick and Sabrina have come from shopping. Your farewell ends with a loving hug. Patrick has bought boards, is taking them to the basement and making a small coffin out of them. When he comes to Tamara's apartment, she confronts him about where he had been for so long. He is angry and pulls her out of the apartment into the church, where she is supposed to go to confession.

Tamara’s family doctor is interviewed at the presidium and confirms that the young mother has been caring. Sudden infant death had already occurred in Tamara's mother and would be genetic in the family. Dellwo has doubts as earlier such deaths were not investigated further for external causes and could well have been a killing. Tamara goes to her mother's apartment to see Emily, although she is actually not allowed to. The mother keeps a short doctor's appointment and leaves the baby at home without supervision. Tamara gains access to her child and barricades herself in a room. When the singer, Dellwo and Mrs. Albany arrive, they fear that Tamara might have done something to their child. But that is not the case, but Tamara is taken away by the police, with Charlotte Sänger accompanying her in the car. On the drive, she confesses to the inspector that Leon accidentally fell off the changing table. The young woman is completely overwhelmed with running the household, looking after the family and coping with financial problems. At the trial date , the young couple's family doctor and the psychologist Prof. Steinkopf get into a lively dispute about the possibility of hereditary sudden infant death syndrome. Since it cannot be proven that Leon died a violent death, the proceedings are discontinued. Tamara can go and gets Emily back too. When she hums her child to sleep, her husband Patrick sits down on the bed with her.

criticism

“Singer and Dellwo are reaching the societal pain threshold. 'The early parting' is about the protection of children and overburdened parents and the excitement that prevails in this country with regard to this topic. 'The whole country only sees child murderers everywhere,' says singer annoyed. More drama than crime. Highly emotional! "

- Rainer Tittelbach, tittelbach.tv

“The creators of the Hessischer Rundfunk have succeeded in producing a haunting and disturbing study. They show a young couple who almost threaten to despair of a screaming child. The viewer sees everyday abysses in the barren high-rise. Emotional and human overstrain everywhere. "

- Christian Sieben, RP Online

“'The early parting' seamlessly follows on from the outstanding Munich 'Tatort' ' Little Hearts ' from December 2007, which showed how a single teenage mother fails in her everyday life. In the Frankfurt crime thriller, a story is told beyond political slogans and daily horror reports about baby bodies in the freezer. Complex and disturbing without giving clear answers. Convincing thanks to a good script, actor and director. Provides a basis for discussions with explosives. "
