The sixth of May (06/05) is the last feature film by the Dutch director Theo van Gogh from 2004. It deals with the partly fictional background of the murder of the politician Pim Fortuyn . The title refers to the day Fortuyn was assassinated, May 6, 2002. The film is based on the book The Death of the Candidate ( De zesde mei ) by Tomas Ross .
action
Shortly after press photographer Jim de Booy finished a spontaneous photo shoot with starlet Birgit Maas at Hilversum's Mediapark , shots were fired: the politician Pim Fortuyn was murdered by Volkert van der Graaff, a radical animal rights activist, following a radio interview. When de Booy recognized the dead driver as a suspect from the previous day while recovering a wrecked car and his images of the recovery were immediately confiscated, he began to research the background to the murder of Pim Fortuyn. It turns out that the Dutch secret service knew about van der Graaff's plans, but let them go. An election victory of Pim Fortuyn would have jeopardized the participation of the Netherlands in the development of the Joint Strike Fighter , as Fortuyn was rather hostile to this project.
This and that
The film contains some documentary recordings, such as a scene from a heated talk show in which Marcel van Dam from the Partij van de Arbeid , ex-minister and director of a public broadcaster at the time, found Fortuyn as an "exceptionally inferior person" while he was still alive "(" Een buitengewoon minderwaardig mens ") had abused. Van Dam wanted to prevent this re-performance in view of the brutal murders of Fortuyn and Van Gogh and sued against the planned theatrical performance. As a result, the film was initially placed on the Internet by the Internet service provider Tiscali for a fee. A court then finally approved the film in the final edition , that is, the viewer gets to see the last complete raw version of the film, whereby he has to accept some lengths and hard cuts. The filmmaker could not improve his work because he was murdered by an Islamist fanatic during post-production. Marcel van Dam resigned from his artistic director position on January 29, 2005.
