Formerly parallel alignment with the Šternberk – Lichkov line

The Zábřeh na Moravě – Sobotín railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the company of the Klein brothers . It connects Zábřeh na Moravě ( Hohenstadt ) via Šumperk ( Mährisch Schönberg ) with the village of Sobotín ( Zöptau ) in the Jeseníky Mountains .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the Šumperk – Sobotín section has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The concession to " build and operate a locomotive railway from Hohenstadt ... via Mährisch Schönberg to Zöptau to the ironworks there " was granted on December 6, 1870 to the Klein brothers, a Moravian industrial family. Part of the concession was the obligation to start construction of the concession line within three months and to complete it within two years. The construction of a second track was only planned for the case, “ if the annual gross profit within two consecutive years amounted to 140,000  florins in silver pr. Mile. “After 30 years, state ownership was possible at any time.

The line was opened on October 1, 1871. The company was run by the privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG) on behalf of the Klein brothers' company.

On June 1, 1872, the line became the property of the kk privileged Moravian Border Railway (MGB), which from then on carried out the operation itself. The Klein brothers' company was also involved in MGB. The main route of the company led from Sternberg to Lichtenau . It was opened in sections between October 1873 and January 1874. Between Mährisch Schönberg and Blauda it used the route of the already existing connection Hohenstadt – Zöptau with a parallel track.

The parallel route between Blauda and Mährisch Schönberg was considered unnecessary after a short time. In 1876 the track of the Hohenstadt – Zöptau line was dismantled, the track of the later Sternberg – Lichtenau line was retained. This is still visible today on the interrupted route kilometers.

From January 1, 1893, it was operated by the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB). The MGB was finally nationalized in 1895, so the kkStB were now also the owner of the infrastructure. After the First World War, the line was transferred to the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD). The 1919 timetable only included two continuous passenger trains, others operated on partial routes. Back then, the shortest travel time over the 22-kilometer route was 65 minutes.

After the Sudetenland became part of Germany on October 1, 1938, the line was administered by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Breslau . In the realm course book the connection was in the course book sections 154T Šumperk-Triebitz-Brüsau-Brünnlitz-Moravian Crostau and 154q Šumperk-Petersdorf adT angle village and Zöptau included. After the end of the Second World War on May 8, 1945, the line came back to the ČSD.

On January 1, 1993, in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia, the line was transferred to the newly founded Czech state railway organization České dráhy (ČD).

Train of Železnice Desná in Šumperk (2010)

In particular, the upper part of the route between Šumperk and Sobotín was badly damaged on July 7, 1997 in a flood. This event occurred at a time when there was serious effort in the Czech Republic to reduce the secondary route network. In this situation, on October 16, 1997, on the initiative of the mayor of Rapotín, a community association ( Svazek obcí údolí Desné ) was founded, which took over the route between Šumperk and Sobotín. On April 30, 1998 it went back into operation under the brand name "Železnice Desná". The management initially took over the company Stavební obnova železnic , since October 1st, 2002 Connex Morava (today Arriva Morava) has been the commissioned railway company for passenger transport. On May 1, 2005, ČD took over freight transport.

The state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC) has been the railway infrastructure company for the Zábřeh na Moravě – Šumperk main line since January 1, 2003 . SART - stavby a re Konstrukce as took over this task for Železnice Desná in 2005.

Renewed platforms in Šumperk (May 2010)

In the years 2008 to 2010, the SŽDC carried out a comprehensive modernization of the Zábřeh na Moravě – Šumperk line. In addition to the comprehensive renovation of all systems, the line also received an overhead contact line for electrical train operation. Work officially started on June 1, 2008. The entire project had a budget of 1.755 million crowns, of which 1.209 million crowns were funded by the European Union . In addition to the construction of the catenary systems, a total of 22,350 meters of track were completely renewed. The new track is designed for a line speed of 100 km / h and for route class D4 (axle load 22.5 tons, meter load 8.0 tons per meter). The Postřelmov, Bludov and Šumperk stations received new platforms at a standardized height of 550 millimeters above the top of the rails. Electric train operation began on September 22, 2009, and the project was finally completed on May 3, 2010.

With the 2010 annual timetable valid from December 10, 2009, there was a comprehensive reorganization of train traffic on the line. The most important innovation is the reintroduction of direct express trains between Brno and Šumperk, which run every two hours (with gaps). The half- hourly passenger trains between Zábřeh na Moravě and Šumperk are now partially connected to and from Nezamyslice and Přerov . The timetable of Železnice Desná lists a total of 14 travel options between Šumperk and Sobotín on weekdays, which do not have a fixed frequency. In Šumperk, connections to and from ČD trains are guaranteed.

The freight traffic on the entire route is handled by ČD Cargo .

In 2013, the municipal association Svazek obcí údolí Desné announced the electrification of the line from Šumperk to Petrov nad Desnou (and on to Kouty nad Desnou). Work began on June 18, 2015 and should be completed by November 2015. In addition to the construction of the catenary, the line was also extensively modernized. All stations and stops in this section have new, barrier-free platforms with a usable length of 90 meters. Since December 2015, the passenger trains from Olomouc to Kouty nad Desnou , which had previously ended in Šumperk, were to be connected. Modern, low-floor electric multiple units of the ČD series 640 are to be used. Until December 2016, however, a ČD class 162 locomotive leased to Arriva by Regiojet and former German intercity cars of the Bimdz type will operate temporarily until December 2016 , along with diesel multiple units . Diesel multiple units will continue to operate between Petrov nad Desnou and Sobotín.
