action

In 1782, in Korea under the Joseon Dynasty , a conspiracy failed to generate tax revenue. King Jeongjo then uses his closest confidante as Chief Royal Investigator to solve the case. When investigating the case of a government official who embezzles taxpayers' money, he meets Han Seo-pil. The officer previously tried to blame him for the crime. When Detective K tries to question the officer in prison, he is already dead. There is a large needle in the back of his head. He also has pustules that come from monkshood . Therefore he decides to make his way to Jeokseong ( 赤城 ), where Monkshood grows. However, a guard finds him in the cell with the murder weapon and thinks he is the murderer.

Detective K is arrested and placed in a prison cell with Seo-pil. This should actually have already been released, but the officer in charge did not feel so well and went home. Seo-pil, who has the skills of a dog, digs his way out of the cell and Detective K follows him. Both see a suspicious looking man, but are discovered and hunted by the guards themselves. However, both can successfully escape. Seo-pil feels obliged to Detective K. Detective K first seeks out King Jeongjo, who removes him from the case because he has broken out of prison. Instead, he should investigate the case of the virtuous widow, who, however, was also based in Jeokseong. Detective K sees this as a hint to secretly investigate the tax evasion of the officials.

Previously, Detective K is selected by Minister Lim. The virtuous widow was the wife of his son. He asks Detective K that their life and death will not be tainted by Christianity. In Jeokseong, Detective K and Seo-pil are looking for more clues. There they come across the dealer, Master Han. The needle with which the officer was murdered came from China and only Han could have imported it. However, Han never shows himself to the public and it is difficult to get to the person. In the meantime, they also find out about the virtuous widow who took care of her husband when he fell ill and who always took good care of the in-laws. After his death, however, she is said to have committed suicide. But during his investigation he finds out that the virtuous widow was there for the whole village and was striving for a world of equality. She owned the fields on which monkshood was grown. Detective K concludes that the cases must be related and that the virtuous widow does not look like a person who is committing suicide.

It turns out that Han Gaek-joo is actually the virtuous widow. Minister Lim found out that she and his son converted to Christianity , a heretical act. He also evaded taxes and killed anyone who was exposed so that no one could betray them. Lim has since found out that Detective K saw through him. Detective K also found the widow's notes that documented Lim's machinations. Lim then arranges for the detective to be murdered. But he can escape. Han, Seo-pil and Detective K confront Lim. However, his people are hiding and protecting Lim. Finally the king and his soldiers arrive. Thus the case is closed.

reception

Detective K opened in South Korean cinemas on January 27, 2011 and reached a total of over 4.7 million viewers. The Lexicon of International Films wrote: "Opulently equipped historical film as a bit too wild a genre mix that does not exhaust its potential, but entertains as a Far Eastern Sherlock Holmes variant." Russell Edwards from Variety reviewed the film positively and compared Detective K with Sherlock Holmes and Inspector Clouseau . The music matches the joke and the tempo of the film and the camera work continues the high standards of Korean productions.
