The German International School in The Hague (abbreviation: DISDH ) is a privately owned German school abroad recognized by the Federal Republic of Germany. Integrated into a network of more than 140 German schools abroad, it is looked after and supported by the Central Office for Schools Abroad in close coordination with the Federal Foreign Office and the federal states.

history

Like many schools abroad, the German School The Hague was originally founded as a parish school in 1856 to prepare for confirmands in the Protestant parish. General school operations began in 1883. The school fee was 10 cents per week in the founding years. Another 5 cents were raised in the winter months as heating money for the purchase of peat , as the chronicle reports.

Until 1920 the German School in The Hague remained the “Church School”. Then it was taken over by the German School Association in The Hague , founded in 1919 . In 1921 the first school leaving examination took place under the chairmanship of a Reich representative. In contrast to the First World War , which indirectly helped the German School in The Hague to flourish, the Second World War saw the temporary demise of the “German Realgymnasium” and the German school system in the Netherlands in general. It was not until 1954 that the “Stichting Duitse Taalkring” and later the school could be reopened in The Hague. The current school building was completed and occupied in 1971.

The DISDH today

The German International School The Hague is one of 140 German schools abroad worldwide that work together through the network of German schools abroad . This cooperation is coordinated by the Central Agency for Schools Abroad (ZfA), which reports to the Federal Foreign Office. This ensures a connection to the German school system for all Germans living in the Netherlands. The strong network makes it easier to move to other international locations and to return to a German domestic school.

Classes for primary school students are based on the curriculum of North Rhine-Westphalia , and for secondary school students according to the curriculum of the state of Baden-Württemberg . The Abitur is taken after 12 years. In 2014, the regional high school diploma was taken for the first time. This is comparable to the domestic central high school diploma, but the tasks in the core subjects are only set centrally for the schools in the training region. The training region includes the German International School The Hague, the International German School Brussels , the German School Geneva , the German School London , the German School Moscow , the International German School Paris and the German School Toulouse .

The German International Abitur examination (DIAP) has been taken at DISDH since 2015 . All students are taught geography in English and history bilingually in German-English. If necessary, new students are introduced to the language requirements with a special support concept.

The international language offer

The general language of instruction is German. This is taught at the native speaker level. In order to enable non-German-speaking students access to the German International School The Hague, language proficiency in the German language is determined upon admission and a possible need for support is determined. German promotion ( German as a foreign language , DaF) begins in kindergarten and is offered at all school levels if necessary. All children receive individual support based on their knowledge of German. The aim is to acquire the verbal and written expression that is necessary for general university entrance qualification.

In the kindergarten, the children are introduced to Dutch in a holistic and situational manner by native speaker teachers. Dutch is taught continuously up to the Abitur. From the first grade onwards, English is offered in AGs , from the third grade onwards in specialist lessons. French is taught as a second foreign language from the sixth grade. Latin and Spanish can be continued in special study groups; there is also an AG offer for Spanish.

Due to the special regulations for the German International Abitur examination, history is taught bilingually from year eight. Geography is taught bilingually from grade 9 as in history. From grade 10 geography is taught exclusively in English. New students may be supported in English.

German Language Diploma (DSD)

The German Language Diploma (DSD) of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs has been accepted in the Netherlands since spring 2017 . The DSD is the only school program in the Federal Republic of Germany for German as a foreign language abroad. It is acquired with an examination at the end of several years of school German lessons. In the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg, a student council advisor is appointed to supervise the preparations and examinations and is based at DISDH.

The DISDH was the first school in the Netherlands where the DSD was taken. Today ten other Dutch schools are part of the DSD program in the Netherlands. With the DSD, Dutch students receive a language certification recognized in Germany, which facilitates university access. The schools themselves can fall back on a wide range of support for their German lessons, which is organized by the student council for BeNeLux, which has its office at DISDH.

THIMUN

The DISDH students regularly take part in the THIMUN project (The Hague International Model United Nations).

The project promotes an intensive examination of current world politics and contemporary history, especially current hot spots and trouble spots. The students have the task of working out diplomatic solutions to global problems. The focus is on the world's most pressing problems, the UN's Millennium Development Goals.

The students learn to research the current topics independently, to form their own point of view and to represent it. The results will then be presented in front of a large international forum with up to 3500 participants from all over the world.

German-Dutch literary competition

The German International School The Hague fulfills an important task in the context of the foreign cultural and educational policy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Netherlands. The annual literary competition enables Dutch schoolchildren to meet a current German author and brings German-language literature closer to Dutch readers.

Dutch high school students from all over the country take part in the competition, which has been taking place since 1992.

The pupils are given the task of translating into Dutch a text from the work of a current German-speaking author that has not yet been published in Dutch. The previous authors were Jurek Becker , Peter Bichsel , Monica Cantieni , Alex Capus , John von Düffel , Hans Magnus Enzensberger , Lilian Faschinger , Thomas Glavinic , Katharina Hacker , Peter Härtling , Vea Kaiser , Karin Kalisa , Wladimir Kaminer , Michael Köhlmeyer , Katja Lange -Müller , Siegfried Lenz , Monika Maron , Clemens Meyer , Herta Müller , Hanns-Josef Ortheil , Ingo Schulze , Peter Stamm , Uwe Timm , Martin Walser , Urs Widmer and Christa Wolf .

School inspection

Official seal of approval

Like domestic schools, German schools abroad are subject to constant quality reviews. In addition, inspections are carried out by the Dutch authorities. As part of the federal-state inspection, DISDH was awarded the Excellent German School Abroad seal of approval in 2011 . As part of a quality circle, a balance sheet visit took place in 2014, during which the implementation of all quality improvement measures was inspected. In 2017, due to the targeted school development, the German International School The Hague awarded the seal of approval as an Excellent School Abroad, even under increased demands.

Language Courses Foundation

The independent German School The Hague Language Courses Foundation ( Stichting Taalcursussen Duitse School Den Haag ) offers courses in German and Dutch as a foreign language at the German International School in The Hague . The foundation also offers private lessons as well as special and company courses .
