With an invitation to the theater meeting, remarkable theater productions of the last two theater seasons are awarded. The selection is made by a board of trustees of the children's and youth theater center, which is composed of theater scholars , directors , theater directors , actors , dramaturges and theater critics. The invited groups show their performances at various Berlin venues that are involved in the field of children's and youth theater, including Theater an der Parkaue and Grips-Theater .

In the 1990s, the Theatertreffen became an important platform for new productions in children's and youth theater. The festival is accompanied by media education projects with Berlin youth and schoolchildren.
