The Dhamtari district is located in the central east of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh .

It was created on July 6, 1998 by splitting off from what was then Raipur district . It extends over an area of ​​2029 km². The eponymous district capital Dhamtari is located on the west bank of the Mahanadi in the far northwest of the district. The headwaters of the Mahanadi as well as the Dudhawa and Gangrel dams are in the district area. Agriculture is dominated by rice cultivation .
