Diagonal - radio for contemporaries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diagonal - Radio for Contemporaries ( gendered since June 2011 Diagonal - Radio for Contemporaries ) is a multi-award-winning program of the Austrian radio station Ö1 . It is broadcast on Saturdays between 5:05 p.m. and 7 p.m., with the exception of the first issue of the month - the entire program is dedicated to one topic. Diagonal first went on air on May 19, 1984.

history

The show was launched as an acoustic weekend feuilleton by the former Musicbox editors Wolfgang Kos and Michael Schrott . Originally, an area of around five hours was planned, an idea that was quickly abandoned in the planning phase. The concept of the format was already found in the first year of broadcast and has essentially been retained until today. A previous broadcast, called Diagonal , as an acoustic holiday supplement, was first broadcast on April 16, 1979, Easter Monday . The theme of this first “protodiagonal” was the “ Orwell year 1984 ”, a theme that was taken up again in 2009, for the 25th anniversary of Diagonal . The program was created in the run-up to the central European debate that broke out in the mid-1980s , as can be seen from the title of the program at the time. As early as 1984 - as one of the first broadcasts - Trieste was portrayed, as was Czernowitz , the capital of the former Habsburg crown land Bukovina .

Structure and topics

Diagonal is devoted to a different topic each week, which is illuminated by several contributions from different perspectives. In doing so, programs on the person and the topic as well as city portraits alternate - without a fixed order . The contributions are held together by a moderation; Between the individual contributions, thematically appropriate music or music desired by the person portrayed is played. An exception is the first program in the month Diagonal presents , which reports on several topics, current events or people. Diagonal to the topic deals with popular cultural phenomena such as television series (e.g. Columbo , Raumschiff Enterprise ) or the comics world capital Duckburg as well as historical ( 1914 , 1967 ), social (e.g. brotherhood , voting ) or cultural-historical (e.g. Ruins , giving ) relevant topics. In Diagonal zu Person , protagonists from different areas of art and culture (e.g. Lady Gaga , Adolf Loos , Olivier Messiaen ), but also historical personalities (e.g. Anton Schmid ) are portrayed. Some of the city portraits illuminate entire cities (e.g. Moscow , Barcelona , Bangkok , Beirut ), some of them special urban sociologically particularly interesting districts (such as "City portrait Vienna - Wiental " or "City portrait Paris Metro line 7 "). “Diagonals feiner Musiksalon” forms the final fifteen minutes in almost every issue.
