Dick's Picks Volume 13 is a Live - triple album of the band Grateful Dead .

history

The songs on the album were recorded on May 6, 1981 in the Nassau Coliseum in Hempstead (New York) and released in March 1999 with the company's own music label Grateful Dead Records .

The Dead performed 43 times at the Nassau Coliseum , three of them in 1981. Originally the concert was planned for May 7th, but on that day the band got an appointment at NBC Studios .

This album is only the second album in the Dick's Picks series which contains material from the 80s. The last studio album before that was Go to Heaven . From this album the songs Alabama Getaway , Lost Sailor , Saint of Circumstance and Don't Ease Me In were used for this evening. The song Caution Jam was played again for the first time since October 27, 1979, and the song Spanish Jam was last played July 16, 1976. Caution Jam is an improvisation of the song Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks) from the album Anthem of the Sun . The next studio album In the Dark came out six years later in 1987, so none of the songs were rehearsed and tested on this show.

Besides the complete setlist of the show, there are two hidden tracks at the end of the second CD. These songs are Scarlet Begonias and Fire On The Mountain from November 1, 1979, also recorded at the Nassau Coliseum .

The name Dick's Pick comes from the official recording archivist of the band Dick Latvala , who started the series and selected the songs for it until his death in 1999.

Like the previous albums in the Dick's Pick series, this one also has a caveat emptor warning:

"This release was digitally mastered directly from the original cassette tapes. It is a snapshot of history, not a modern professional recording, and may therefore exhibit some minor technical anomolies and the unavoidable effects of the ravages of time. "

criticism

In general, Dick's Picks Volume 12 received good reviews. The album received 4 out of 5 stars from All Music Guide and The Music Box .
