The Adventures of Captain Grant (Original Title: In Search of the Castaways ) is an American adventure film directed by Robert Stevenson from 1962 and starring Maurice Chevalier , Hayley Mills , George Sanders , Wilfrid Hyde-White and Michael Anderson Jr. in the lead roles . The film was produced by the Walt Disney Company based on the novel The Children of Captain Grant by Jules Verne .

The youthful Mary Grant goes to Glasgow with her younger brother Robert and a family friend, the young-at-heart French scientist Professor Jacques Paganel, to convince the quirky but honest Lord Glenarvan to own the shipping company after her father, the shipwrecked Captain John Grant.

The daring company on board the large yacht "Persevero" soon turns out to be an adventurous journey halfway around the world. The mixed expedition first set course for South America , and Glenarvan's luxurious paddle steamer sets all sails to reach the coastal town of Concepción in Chile as quickly as possible in the search for the missing captain Grant, only to then travel to New Zealand .

The colorful community experiences many different adventures and dangers including an earthquake, a flash flood, an avalanche, an attack by a huge condor, as well as various eerie encounters with alligators, jaguars, mutineers and an erupting volcano. On the journey itself unravels increasingly a budding romance between Mary and John Glenarvan before after a seemingly endless journey through the mention of the lost sea captain in the end it still manages to missing persons along the 37th latitude track again.

Production notes

The sound editing comes from Gordon K. McCallum and Peter Thornton, the costumes were provided by Margaret Furse , and the buildings were designed by Michael Stringer . Harry Frampton and Barbara Ritchie were responsible for the masks and hairstyles. The special effects came from Sydney Pearson. Muir Mathieson was the conductor as the musical director. The film was set at Pinewood Studios , Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire in England .
