The Bandits of Milan is a crime film by Carlo Lizzani that was shown as an Italian entry in the competition at the Berlin Film Festival in 1968 . It was also shown in cinemas from September 13 of this year.
action
Vigilante justice is apparently practiced on the streets of Milan. In an interview with a journalist, Commissioner Basevi recounts and comments on everyday criminal events. Basevi then arrests a bank robber who threatens to be lynched. This gangster, Bartolini, reports on an organization led by Piero Cavallero that carries out terrorist attacks and assaults.
One of these raids is planned and carried out in great detail; the members of the gang shoot their way to escape, but the police stay on their tracks, arrest the gang members one after the other and finally corner Cavallero as well. When he was found and arrested in an abandoned homestead, thanks to a tip from the population, he turned his defeat into a victory by standing in triumphant pose in front of the assembled journalists.
criticism
The director chose an unusually nested narrative structure, which was combined with means of flashback and reportage style. The result was an extraordinarily exciting film, which lives above all from the excellent performance of the actors, writes Karsten Thurau in a reference work on Italian films in the genre. The lexicon of international film raises the bar and judges that “the claim of the film to expose the methods and goals of a new criminality in the big cities of northern Italy is not being realized; instead, the film offers effective, exciting entertainment. "
Italian critics remarked that the first part was unprecedented, but also purely didactic, the second one of excellent design.
Remarks
