occupation

Die Kreuzritter - The Crusaders is a two-part miniseries from 2001, which tells of the Crusades under Pope Urban II, directed by Dominique Othenin-Girard .

action

The two friends Martin and Andreas grow up almost like brothers in a small village in the Principality of Taranto . But when Martin falls in love with the beautiful Maria, he has to fear the wrath of the village thief Sebastian (a servant of a nobleman).

In order to escape the anger and also to survive adventure, Martin decides to obey the Pope's call and goes to war in Palestine ; Richard (the son of a nobleman) and Andreas go with him.

Before leaving for the Holy Land, the three friends have to undergo rigorous training to become soldiers, which is carried out by a Viking. In the course of their stay in the Holy Land they have to realize that the war is pointless and that the Jews and Muslims can claim the land as well as the Christians .

After the sack of a city that is only inhabited by Jews, they meet the Jewess Rahel, with whom Andreas and Martin fall equally in love. Friends become enemies, between whom a war breaks out and friendship ends in the end.

Reviews

“Elaborate, gorgeous television history and adventure film that portrays the crusades not as a matter of faith, but as a measure of power politics. In doing so, of course, he always feels obliged to follow sentimental viewing habits, which leads to dilution. Actually not particularly convincing either. "

Historical implausibilities

The film contains many implausibilities , such as:

  • the existence of a purely Jewish city, which has a city wall and its own guards and is accidentally burned down by a crusader contingent
  • Assault troops climbing the scaling ladders without weapons
  • City gates that splinter without the attacker using battering rams or the like
