action

Inan Asmus fell in love with the beautiful Baroness Edda Hohentrieb. But the young woman is already engaged to Count Stolzenfels, and he sees the competitor's languishing looks and attempts at courtship with growing displeasure. A colleague named Nemo, in truth none other than Satan himself, offers Inan to actively support him in conquering Edda. From now on, Nemo has power over his protégé. He tells the young climber that he could achieve anything if only he would obey him, the camouflaged prince of hell. To satisfy power and ambition, Satan lets Asmus become a politician. As a member of parliament, he quickly climbed the corporate ladder and even became a minister. Edda impressed Inan's striving upwards and so she quickly left her count's fiancé to the left.

One night she comes to Inan and asks the unscrupulous careerist to flee with her. But Nemo alias Satan does not want the good and noble to triumph in the form of a blossoming love and therefore destroys everything that he has built between these two young people in one fell swoop. He causes serious unrest by inciting the grumbling workers against the politician Asmus. This is too much for Inan's poor health; he dies of a severe heart attack. A little later it also hits Edda. During a ride, she falls off the horse and breaks her neck. She is laid out side by side with Inan Asmus, both still united in death.

Production notes

The Memoirs of Satan , created in the second half of 1917 in the Luna-Film-Atelier in Berlin's Friedrichstrasse 224, is one of the forgotten major German silent film projects from the imperial era. It is the most elaborate screen epic before the end of the war in 1918 based on Otto Rippert's Homunculus film. Many details (especially the distribution of roles) are no longer known today, and there is even disagreement about the actor who played Satan. While some sources name Friedrich Kühne, others claim that Kurt Brenkendorf played the title hero. Possibly both actors took turns in the four parts as Satan.

The second part, Fanatic of Life, passed film censorship in November 1917 and was probably also released in theaters that same year. This part was 1,681 meters long, divided into five acts.

Reviews

“The second part of this film takes far more into account the tastes of the audience than the first. The plot is extremely interesting and exciting, the ingenious basic idea of the first part is deepened and, if possible, elaborated even more captivating. [...] Satan plays with all human feelings, with love and hate, with greed for money, with the addiction to fame and honor; and whoever gets into his claws has a gruesome end. [...] The film is carefully and safely designed, superbly staged and photographically excellent. "
