occupation

The Spider Murphy Gang is a German feature film from 1983 about the Munich pop / rock band of the same name . The film was produced by Michael Verhoeven .

action

The Spider Murphy Gang are the four Bavarians Günther Sigl , Michael Busse, Franz Trojan and Barney Murphy who want to get started as band musicians. They don't feel like covering any US pop tracks in clubs where mostly Americans hang out. Rather, they want to make their own music: Bavarian dialect texts in pop clothing, a kind of Bavarian rock 'n' roll, which is also appreciated north of the white sausage equator . But with their original idea, the four of them quickly bite the granite, nobody believes that you can fill any room with “Bavarian Rock”, especially in dialect-tinged German. The musicians will soon run out of money, especially since Günther, the only one among them who has so far been on wages, has given up his job as a banker. To make the misfortune perfect, his girlfriend also donates.

Now it's time for the passionate and enthusiastic musicians: Put everything on one card. They should get their chance in a shabby pint in Munich- Haidhausen - as a stopgap for a fancy gig . The four boys arrive at the guests' house, and the pub owner Joschko, a real rascal, senses his chance for big money. But first he has to get the new combo up and running financially in order to record a record with them. The disc, however, is a total slow-moving, and the emerging music career gets stuck right at the beginning. But the "Spiders" do not let themselves get down and without further ado rent the Circus Krone , where the Beatles had already achieved great success in June 1966. And actually this gig will be her breakthrough.

Production notes

The Spider Murphy Gang was filmed mainly in Munich and premiered on October 6, 1983.

Director Georg Kostya had made a name for himself as the presenter of a rock show on Bavarian radio. The film structures were designed by Norbert Scherer .

The film made by Senta Bergers and Michael Verhoevens Munich production company Sentana ran very badly outside of Bavaria almost everywhere in Germany.

Reviews

“'The Spider Murphy Gang', the career story of the four valentines, portrayed professionally by themselves, written and shot by their 'godfather', the Munich TV and theater man Georg Kostya. The astonishingly nimble, fluffy debut work, full of backyard milieu and Schwabing slapstick, casually aims beyond the comedy occasion. Cabaret, not just great opera, should also be encouraged, says the godfather in the film, a rogue bar host (Hans Brenner); he is a wheelchair user like the director Kostya himself, and he is completely unsentimentally integrated into the 'gang' and their stories - in real life Kostya also fights for the rights of the 'wheelchairs'. "

- Der Spiegel , No. 41 of October 10, 1983

“A cheerful look back at the rise of a Munich rock group that celebrated success in the wake of the 'Neue Deutsche Welle' in the early 80s. Staged without great ambitions, but quite entertaining thanks to ironic nuances. "
