You're the One That I Want is a song by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John from 1978 . The song was written and produced by John Farrar for the film of the musical Grease .

The title was a worldwide hit and reached number 1 in numerous countries. It reached number 1 on the American Billboard Hot 100 for one week in June 1978 , sold over 2 million copies in the United States and went platinum there. Also reached You're the One That I Want in the summer of 1978 for 9 weeks number 1 of the British charts and in the UK since 2008, selling over 1,975,000 units in 6th place of the most successful singles of all time. The re-release of the title reached number 4 on the UK charts in 1998. You're the One That I Want was also a number one hit in German-speaking countries .

Cover versions

Helga Feddersen and Dieter Hallervorden also reached number four in the German charts (21 chart weeks) and number twelve on the Austrian hit list (twelve chart weeks) with the German parody Du, die Wanne was also in 1978 . The version with a text by Frank Dostal appeared in late 1978 both as a single with Philips and later on numerous compilations .

They sang the song twice in the ZDF hit parade , at a time when it was organized according to sales figures. The song was first placed on December 11, 1978 in sixth place, but the duo was not present, also on January 8, 1979 (second place). Feddersen and Hallervorden sang the song on February 5 and March 5, 1979 (place two), on April 2 (place four) and May 7, 1979 (place 14) they were again not in the studio. Thus, the song was represented in the program for almost six months. Moderator Dieter Thomas Heck explained the absence in December by saying that Feddersen and Hallervorden initially did not dare to sing the song live. In the later appearances, the two - as in numerous other TV appearances - then performed a stupid choreography with partial playback .
