action

In order to remain in power and to protect the life of his son who was begotten by a slave, the cruel Prince Popiel decides, urged by the mother of his son, to murder one of the two sons of his deceased brother who have matured to become heirs to the throne to attach the deed to the other. Later he exterminates his entire clan, making the throne seem safe for his bastard.

Meanwhile, in a forest, the young warrior Ziemowit falls in love with a girl who was promised to the gods as a priestess. When he heard the noises of battle, he met the army commander Piastun, who was in dire straits and who had discovered the prince's dark goings-on and was supposed to be killed by his men. Ziemowit kills the attackers. He and his loved one bring the injured Piastun to their father, where the military leader ensures that the other peasants also learn of the prince's deeds. A meeting is called at which it is agreed to storm the prince's castle. The plan fails, so the farmers go to besiege the castle. However, the prince had previously called the Vikings , who devastate the peasants' land and put the besieging to flight. Subsequently, however, the peasants do not ask for forgiveness as intended by the prince, but choose Piastun as their chief, whose tactical skill they can use to keep the Vikings in check in the ensuing battle. To prevent even more bloodshed, a decisive duel between the Jarl of the Vikings and Ziemowit is decided, at the end of which the north man falls and his last men choose suicide.

A second siege of the castle also seals the fate of the cruel prince. The grain in the granary is eaten by mice, his bastard son loses his life by accidentally ingesting poison and when the prince curses the gods from the castle tower, a blazing lightning strikes him down. The people are freed from the tyrant. Piastun is appointed the new prince. The young warrior Ziemowit accepts his election as the successor of the childless general and allows the gods to steal his beloved for marriage.
