The Diederichs publishing house is a German publishing house with seat in Munich . It was founded in 1896 by Eugen Diederichs and decisively shaped intellectual life at the beginning of the 20th century . After three generations of family ownership, Diederichs Verlag belonged to Hugendubel from 1988 . Since 2008 he has been an independent part of the Random House publishing group .

history

The trained bookseller Eugen Diederichs (1867–1930) traveled to Italy after the death of his father. The travel reports published in his hometown Naumburg (Saale) formed the basis of his publishing activities. In 1896 Diederichs founded his book publisher. Initially based in Florence , Diederichs later moved his publishing house to Leipzig and finally settled in Jena in 1904 . There he reached the height of his work. Thanks to Diederich's work, the Thuringian university town developed into one of the most important German publishing locations.

Classical and romantic literary works were on the program as well as non-fiction books. In addition to work editions such as those by Hans Christian Andersen, Henri Bergson, Maxim Gorki, Søren Kierkegaard, Leo N. Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov, numerous book series have been published such as the “Monographs on German Cultural History”. In addition to the “ Thule Collection ”, the “ Fairy Tales of World Literature ”, whose total bibliography to date comprises 174 editions, were particularly important .

In the 1930s, Diederich's sons Niels and Peter continued to run the publishing house. During the Nazi era, they adapted the portfolio to the intellectual requirements of the regime. After the Second World War, both resumed operations in Düsseldorf and Cologne . From 1973 to 1988 Diederich's grandson Ulf ran the publishing house. Due to economic difficulties it was finally sold to Heinrich Hugendubel . He tried to position the publisher “between tradition and innovation”. In 1999 Diederichs became an imprint of the Hugendubel publishing house and with this was sold to the business lawyer Monika Roell .

In 2008 the Random House publishing group announced the takeover of the Imprints, including Diederichs, belonging to Hugendubel Verlag. The archive of the publisher and the family came under the roof of the Thuringian University and State Library . While the focus was on “world cultures, fairy tales from world literature and world religions”, the profile of Diederichs Verlag was changed several times in the following years and the program was gradually rebuilt.
