Dieter Bertholdt
Dieter Bertholdt (born July 20, 1935 in Dresden ) is a German chess player .
Life
Dieter Bertholdt is a graduate mathematician and has worked, among other things, in aircraft construction. He had his strongest phase as a chess player from 1955 to 1962. After a 25-year hiatus, he did not resume playing chess until the late 1980s.
successes
National team
Between 1956 and 1960 he was an integral part of the GDR national team at the annual student Olympics. In the 49 games that he played in the student Olympics, he achieved 29 points (+21 = 16 −12). His great successes at these events in 1957 in Reykjavík included draws against Nikolay Minev and Boris Spasski , who was already the grandmaster at the time , a draw against Buchuti Gurgenidze in Varna in 1958 and a win against Joop in Leningrad in 1960 van Oosterom .
At the 1958 Chess Olympiad in Munich he played on board four of the GDR national team, which also consisted of the then international champion Wolfgang Uhlmann on the top board as well as Burkhard Malich , Sieghart Dittmann , Reinhart Fuchs and Wolfgang Pietzsch . In the preliminary round, the GDR achieved a surprising 2-2 against the Hungarians, who competed with the two grandmasters László Szabó and Gedeon Barcza , with Dieter Bertholdt achieving a remarkable draw against Lajos Portisch (see example game). Portisch struggled with himself because he had missed the win and his team was eliminated in the preliminary round. The GDR, however, was in the final round. This was clearly dominated by the USSR and the class brother was not spared either: The GDR was dismantled 4-0 and Dieter Bertholdt was defeated by the eventual world champion Michail Tal . Nevertheless, the sixth place jumped out in the end. Dieter Bertholdt lost in this tournament next to Tal only against Borislav Ivkov and Jonathan Penrose , but had a positive balance in his remaining games.
At the Chess Olympiad in Leipzig in 1960 he was first part of the DSV's extended squad. Since he had little preparation time for professional reasons and had a bad result at a training tournament in Bad Salzungen , Werner Golz was given preference for the Olympics.
Teams, individual tournaments and rating
Dieter Bertholdt's first club was the SG Mickten in Dresden in 1949, of which Wolfgang Uhlmann was also a member at that time. From there he moved to BSG Rotation Dresden , but was then delegated from there, together with Wolfgang Uhlmann and the siblings Rudolf and Edith Keller, to the newly founded Sports Club Einheit Dresden . With the SC unit he won the GDR championship title in 1957 , 1958 and 1962 . In 1962 he retired from chess. He only played again in 1987, on the first board of the HSG Humboldt University in Berlin . Currently (as of 2008) he plays on the first board of the SV Turbine Berlin e. V. in the Berlin team championship.
He had great success in individual tournaments at GDR individual championships . At the 6th GDR championship, which was held in Leipzig in 1956, he scored 9.5 points from 15 games and took third place. At the following GDR championship in Sömmerda in 1957, he was second.
His best historical rating was 2514 in November 1958.

After a loss to Lajos Portisch at the 1957 Student World Cup in Reykjavík, Bertholdt met the Hungarians again in the sixth round of the group stage at the 1958 Chess Olympiad. The favored Hungarian team did not get beyond a 2-2 draw against the GDR and were eliminated after nine rounds in the group stage, while the GDR qualified for the final round.
