At the GDR team championship in chess in 1958 , SC Einheit Dresden won the GDR team championship for the second time in a row .

A round-robin tournament was played in a special league, with each team playing four team fights on eight boards against each other, the so-called half-Scheveningen system . There were a total of 24 team fights, so 192 games.

With a view to the formation of priorities, a restructuring of the top divisions was decided in 1955. A special league was created for the 1955/56 season.

At the same time the team fights of the league took place, which BSG Motor Gotha won. A playoff between the two winners had to decide the title.
