At the GDR team championship in chess in 1980 , Buna Halle-Neustadt won the GDR team championship for the ninth time .

A round-robin tournament was played according to the Scheveningen system , with each team fought four team fights on eight boards against each other. In total there were 112 team fights, so 896 games.
