GDR team championship in chess 1961

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At the GDR team championship in chess in 1961 TSC Oberschöneweide was able to defend the title and won the GDR team championship for the third time after 1959 and 1960 .

A round-robin tournament was played , with each team fought four team matches on eight boards against each other, the so-called half-Scheveningen system . There were a total of 60 team fights, so 480 games. In the shortened Scheveningen system, the first four players on each team form the upper house and the second four form the lower house . In this way, each team is practically made up of two teams, but their results are considered as a whole. While the first half was played on weekends, the second half (ten rounds) took place centrally in Halle an der Saale from May 7th to 14th, 1961.

The two favorite teams TSC Oberschöneweide and SC Chemie Halle only met in the last game of the second round. In the first round in Berlin , the Halle team had won 10: 6 against the Berlin team. The decision about the title was therefore only made in the last round.
