At the east zone team championship in chess in 1949 , the BSG Erich Zeigner, Leipzig won the German team championship in the east zone and was thus team champion in the Soviet zone of occupation .

The final fights of the German championship in 1949 were held in the Harz town of Wernigerode . Six teams played a round-robin tournament with teams of ten in the final . It was the last championship of the Soviet occupation zone . The chairman of the tournament management was Gustav Müller from Berlin. Since two teams from Saxony-Anhalt had come, it was decided before the start that only one team was eligible to play. Both teams Magdeburg and Dessau were allowed to play, but only the results of one of the two teams counted in the final accounting for the championship. This was decided by direct comparison between the two teams concerned.
