At the GDR team championship in chess in 1978 , Buna Halle-Neustadt won the GDR team championship for the seventh time .

A round-robin tournament was played , with each team fought four team matches on eight boards against each other. In total there were 112 team fights, so 896 games.

Halle was six points ahead, although Leipzig won all matches that were played according to the Scheveningen system .
