GDR team championship in chess 1964

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

At the GDR team championship in chess in 1964 , Chemie Halle won the GDR team championship and took the title for the third time after 1955 and 1956.

A round-robin tournament was played, with each team fought four team matches on eight boards against each other, the so-called half-Scheveningen system. There were a total of 60 team fights, so 480 games. In the shortened Scheveningen system, the first four players on each team form the upper house and the second four form the lower house. In this way, each team is practically made up of two teams, but their results are considered as a whole. While the first half was played on weekends, the second half (ten rounds) took place centrally in Dresden .

From May 3 to 10, 1964, the last 10 rounds were held centrally in the clubhouse of the VEB Sachsenwerk Niedersedlitz in Dresden. After a strong final spurt, the Halle team were again team champions of the GDR after eight years. After the first half TSC Berlin I was still leading with 51 points ahead of SC Chemie Halle with 50.5 points.
