At the GDR team championship in chess in 1989 , Baukombinat Leipzig won the GDR team championship for the thirteenth time .

A round-robin tournament was played , with each team playing two team fights on eight boards against each other. There were a total of 56 team fights, so 448 games. The central final round took place in Leipzig . Before the final, everything was still open at the top.
