Manfred Schöneberg (born  July 6, 1946 in Leipzig ) is a German chess player , computer scientist and holder of the title FIDE master . His greatest successes were winning the GDR individual championship in 1972 and third place with the GDR team at the European team championship in 1970.

Manfred Schöneberg was born in Leipzig in 1946 and learned to play chess from his father when he was seven. In 1961 he became pioneer master of the GDR , in 1964 youth champion before Lutz Espig and in 1966 student master . He has lived in his hometown since he was born. After graduating from high school , he studied mathematics at the University of Leipzig from 1965 to 1970 . In addition, from 1974 to 1979 he completed a correspondence course in computer science at the Dresden University of Engineering , which he completed with a degree in engineering . From 1970 he worked as a computer scientist, the last ten years in the administration of the University of Leipzig. He has been married since 1968 and has three children.

Manfred Schöneberg finished fifth to seventh with Robert Huebner at the Junior World Championships in Barcelona in 1965 . In 1972 he won the individual championship of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in Görlitz ahead of Burkhard Malich , Rainer Knaak , other grandmasters and Lothar Zinn . In 1969 and 1972 he won the GDR championships in blitz chess .

Manfred Schöneberg played in the five years from 1965 to 1969 in the student team world championship for the GDR. With the GDR team, he reached third place in the European team championship in chess held in Kapfenberg in 1970 . Two years later at the 20th Chess Olympiad taking place in Skopje , he and his team achieved tenth place. In addition, he was in 1968, 1970 to 1973, 1976, 1977, 1981 to 1985 and 1989 with the Leipzig Chess Community (from 1983 Baukombinat Leipzig) GDR team champion .

In the German federal chess league he played for SC 1868 Bamberg in 1990/1991 and for VdS Buna Halle in 1991/1992 .

He also achieved success as a senior. At the LGA Premium Chess CUP 2010 in Nuremberg he achieved 4.5 points from seven games and was in the final table ahead of the grandmasters Lutz Espig , Raj Tischbierek , Jonny Hector and Jens-Uwe Maiwald, among others .
