Georg Ludwig Alexander von Wahlen-Jürgaß (born June 5, 1758 in Ganzer ; † November 8, 1833 ibid) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

His parents were Georg Christoph von Wahlen-Jürgass (1710–1771) and his wife Charlotte Katharina Luise, born von Zieten (1719–1771) from the Brunn family, daughter of Hans Christian von Zieten (1682–1739) and Anna Juliana Susanne from Medes from the Mehlbach house. His father was Herr auf Ganzer, Wahlendorf, Groß- and Klein-Dessow, Woltersdorf and Charlottenhof, district administrator of the Ruppin district and a Prussian major a. D. , most recently with the 1st Guard Battalion . With the death of his brother Franz Karl Wilhelm Rudolf von Wahlen-Jürgass (1752–1834), the male line died out. Gut Ganzer came to the Rohr family . On July 28, 1836, Otto von Rohr received royal approval for the association of names and coats of arms. He was then allowed to call himself von Rohr-Wahlen-Jürgass.

Military career

Wahlen-Jürgaß came to the cadet academy in Berlin in 1772, in August 1775 he was employed as a standard junker in the Gensdarmes regiment of the Prussian army . As a cornet he took part in the battle near Jägersdorf in 1778/79 during the War of the Bavarian Succession . Wahlen-Juergaß advanced to the rank of chief of staff until the end of May 1789 and was deployed with his regiment in Poland in 1794 . As a major he fought in the 1806 campaign near Jena . After the battle, the regiment with only 350 horses was overtaken on October 27, 1806 at Wichmannsdorf near Boitzenburg in the Uckermark . On a moonlit night, the Baumont division managed to encircle the regiment. Only a few officers, including Wahlen-Jürgass, four non-commissioned officers and forty commoners, managed to escape with the standard. The small troop reached the "Hohenlohe" corps. When this had to capitulate at Prenzlau , the troops were able to withdraw again. It was planned to make their way to Uckermünde, but first met the "Bila" corps. They joined him and then had to capitulate in Anklam with the corps. Wahlen-Juergaß was captured there, but was soon released.

After the Peace of Tilsit , he went to his brother's estate at Ganzer. At the end of April 1809 Wahlen-Jürgaß returned to the army and was employed as squadron chief in the Brandenburg Cuirassier Regiment . At the end of June 1809 he was given the command of the Brandenburg Dragoon Regiment . In February 1812 Wahlen-Jürgaß became lieutenant colonel and came to Kurland with an auxiliary corps under Grawert . There he commanded the outposts. In the battle near Garossenkrug, he was able to throw back far superior Russian cavalry. For this he received the order Pour le Mérite .

In March 1813 Wahlen-Jürgaß was promoted to colonel and led a brigade in the "Blücher" corps . He took part in the battle of Großgörschen and received the Iron Cross, 2nd class. In the battle near Haynau he led the first attack and rode three enemy squares over the pile. He was wounded in the leg by a shot. In the second attack, his horse was seriously injured. After this battle he received the Iron Cross 1st class.

During the armistice he became the commander of the reserve cavalry of the 1st Army Corps (Prussia) in the Silesian Army . Then he fought again in the battle of the Katzbach and Möckern . On October 20, he met the French with the reserve cavalry at Reichardtswerbe and was able to defeat them. He then fought in battle near Eisenach. After the army had crossed the Rhine, he was promoted to major general on December 8th and awarded the oak leaves to the Pour le Mérite. Wahlen-Juergaß was then assigned to the army of Prince Wilhelm of Prussia with the reserve cavalry . In the battle near Lauchsee on February 3, 1814, the troops of Marshal MacDonald were met , which he was able to defeat together with General Katzeler . A standard , five cannons and three ammunition wagons were captured. In the battle of Laon on March 9, 1814, his regiments captured 15 cannons and 35 artillery cars. In the battles at Oulchy, Sizanne, and Claye , he took part, as at Laon, under Zieten's command. The Russian Tsar awarded Wahlen-Jurgass the Order of Saint Vladimir III for his achievements . In 1815 he commanded the reserve cavalry of the II Army Corps under Georg Dubislav Ludwig von Pirch . In the battle of Ligny he was on the far right wing when enemy tirailleurs attacked from St. Amand-la-Haye towards evening . Wahlen-Juergass met them with a squadron of hussars, but was seriously wounded in the scuffle by a shot in the shoulder. This wounding hindered him very much, so that Wahlen-Juergaß was retired from military service on October 15, 1816, conferring the character of Lieutenant General with a pension .

After his release he lived alternately in Berlin or entirely with his brother. He was also often in Teplitz, where he looked after the consequences of his injuries. On June 18, 1825 Wahlen-Jürgaß was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st class. The general died unmarried on November 8, 1833 in Ganzer.
