Dieter Gutknecht (born February 4, 1939 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian hydrologist and for many years director of the Institute for Hydraulics , Hydrology and Water Management at the Vienna University of Technology . He is considered to be one of the founders of scientific hydrology in Austria.

Life

Gutknecht attended the Bundesrealgymnasium at Franz-Josef-Kai in Salzburg, where he graduated in 1957. From 1957 to 1964 he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Vienna . From 1964 to 1979 he worked as an assistant at the Institute for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Management. Gutknecht received his doctorate in 1973. From 1975 to 1976 he completed a research stay at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He completed his habilitation in 1978 on "Methods of hydrological short-term forecasting". In 1980 he was appointed Ao university professor. From 1986 to 1987 he was a visiting lecturer at the ETH Zurich . Gutknecht was appointed full professor in 1989 and headed the Institute for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Water Management (now Hydraulic Engineering and Engineering Hydrology) at the Vienna University of Technology from then until 2012.

Dieter Gutknecht is married and has three children.

Scientific work

The models developed by Gutknecht for the hydrological forecast of high and low water and their practical implementation in operational water level and discharge forecasts are now used on all major Austrian rivers such as the Drau , Gail , Salzach , Inn and Danube . The Austrian electricity industry uses these forecasting methods for the deployment planning of its hydropower plants and for decisions on electricity trading .

Under his scientific direction, a large number of projects were carried out at the institute on behalf of and in cooperation with federal ministries, state governments , torrent and avalanche control and power plant companies. Furthermore, work on basic research was carried out with funding from the Austrian Academy of Sciences , the Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research and the European Union .

An important concern for Dieter Gutknecht was and is the promotion of young female scientists. Among other things, he took part in the pilot project of the mentoring program of the Vienna University of Technology from 2005 to 2007. Within the framework of this program, the mentors passed on their experiences with scientific networks and with university institutions.
