Electronic Arts Digital Illusions Creative Entertainment AB , shortly EA DICE , is a Swedish computer game - development company based in Stockholm .

history

The company was founded in 1992 by the members of the former demo scene group The Silents Ulf Mandorff, Olof Gustafsson, Fredrik Liliegren and Andreas Axelsson. All members came from the small town of Alvesta in Sweden . The demo scene influence can be seen in some DICE games. For example, the TSL acronym used by The Silents group appears on banners and signs in the game Motorhead . According to Motorhead's operating instructions , TSL stands for Transatlantic Speed League , so it is used in the manner of a backronym .

They developed their first game, Pinball Dreams , for the Amiga in 1989 , when they were still in school. Today they are mainly known for the Battlefield series they developed , which are based on game engines that they developed themselves .

The company has been listed on the stock exchange since 1998. The largest shareholder was the publisher Electronic Arts with over 67% since January 2005. In October 2006 DICE was bought by Electronic Arts to 100% and incorporated into the global group. Digital Illusions CE has been renamed EA Digital Illusions CE.

In 2005 the DICE team completed the third part of the Battlefield series, Battlefield 2 , the successor to Battlefield Vietnam , and sold over a million times. The Canadian studios, which had already developed Battlefield Vietnam, were once again commissioned to develop the Special Forces add-on . Battlefield 2: Modern Combat , which is only available for consoles, was released in November 2005. DICE was also commissioned by EA to develop the fifth installment in the series, Battlefield 2142 , which was released in September 2006. The title of the battlefield series Battlefield: Bad Company 2 , developed for consoles and the PC, was released in March 2010. Battlefield 3 has been available since the end of October 2011 and for the first time presented detailed statistics for every player on a website. On October 31, 2013, the title Battlefield 4 followed , which took over these online statistics from the predecessor Battlefield 3 and also made it possible to control a drone in the game via a tablet . In 2015, Battlefield Hardline and Star Wars: Battlefront followed , with Battlefield Hardline largely developed by Visceral Games . In October 2016, the next offshoot, Battlefield 1 , which takes place in the First World War , came on the market. In the following year, the second part of the Star War developed by Dice appeared : Battlefront II and in 2018 Battlefield V , which takes place in World War II.

After signing a contract with the development studio Trauma Studios, which became known through the Battlefield 1942 Mod Desert Combat , in early 2004 to work on future games, DICE bought Trauma Studios with 9 employees in September 2004. In June 2005, after just six months, DICE announced the closure of its Trauma Studios in New York . The employees were offered to continue working in Sweden.

Takeover by Electronic Arts

A press release dated August 25, 2006 already indicated that the world's largest publisher of computer games, Electronic Arts , would buy DICE. The takeover was fully completed on October 2, 2006 and DICE is a wholly owned subsidiary of EA. As a direct result of the takeover, DICE Canada (Ontario, Canada) was closed and the employees relocated to the previous EA Canada (Toronto, Canada) studio. Contrary to rumors, no redundancies were planned and the Swedish studio continued to operate.

In June 2013, simultaneously with the announcement of the acquisition of the Star Wars license, EA established a branch studio for DICE in Los Angeles. It took over some employees of the previously closed EA studio Danger Close .
