Digital is better is the first album by the German indie rock group Tocotronic . It was published on March 6, 1995 by L'age d'or . The album was a great success for the band in the independent scene and is still considered by many to be a milestone in German-language music history.

Recordings

The album was recorded in a few days in the Soundgarden Studio in Hamburg . It was produced by Carol von Rautenkranz and Christian Mevs.

style

The whole album impresses with its simplicity and directness both in the musical and in the lyrical execution. Dirk von Lowtzow's texts convince through their " slogan-like " character while at the same time describing the feelings and situations in everyday life of an adolescent. Musically, the implementation seems very simple, almost amateurish, which led to the band having a long reputation for not being able to master their instruments properly. The spectrum of the album ranges from wild "rattling" with clear punk influences to nöly ballads.

Reviews

Digital is better is generally rated extremely positively. Many reviews and also the placements in various all-time charts rate the album as a milestone in German-language music history.

Friederike Haupt wrote on cd-kritik.de in 2004 : “[...] 18 songs that are second to none. And no, that's not an exaggeration. ”And thinks digital is better “ is an album that today [...] can hardly be valued highly enough ”.

In the fanzine The Chelsea Chronicle it was said: "Digital is better [...] in its mangy immediacy is probably the best piece of German-language pop music ever".

On the homepage of on3-radio the album is described as "a milestone in German pop history". In a review on intro.de , the author considers it "one of the most honest records these days" and particularly praises the simplicity and directness of the texts.

successes

In the music show The ball is round the HR is digital is better named the album of the year. For the readers of Spex , Tocotronic is the best newcomer and third best band in 1995.

Digital is better has been included in numerous all-time charts in various music magazines over the years. In 2003, Musikexpress placed the album in fourth place of the 25 best German-language pop albums and also listed it in the top 50 of the best records of the 90s and the best and most important debut albums . In Visions , Tocotronic's debut album made it into the list of 150 records for the ages and the 100 most important albums of the nineties . The German Rolling Stone takes digital is better even in the ranking of the 500 best albums of all time on.
