Doane's Falls (officially Doane Falls or Doanes Falls ) is a five-tier waterfall in the 46 acres (18.6  ha ) nature reserve of the same name  near the city of Royalston in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . The reserve is managed by the organization The Trustees of Reservations .

history

Amos Doane, after whom the reserve is named today, owned some land in the early 19th century in the center of Royalston, which was an important and steadily growing industrial location at the time. Doane built an L-shaped sawmill four stories tall and 50  ft (15.2  m ) long over the waterfall , producing doors, window frames and shutters there. Although previous ventures at this location were very successful, Doane had to go out of business after a while.

In 1959 the trustees were able to acquire the first parts, further purchases followed in 1975, 1984 and 1992.

Protected area

The falls lead the Lawrence Brook , a tributary of the Millers River , to Tully Lake further south . There is a footpath on both sides of the river that offers good viewpoints of the falls. At the headwaters is the 14 acres (5.7 ha) clearing of Coddings Meadow , from where the river can be observed as a very calm watercourse. There it is also possible to navigate the river by canoe or kayak . A large beaver dam can be seen from the boat further upstream in a swamp with red maples .

A 0.5 mi (0.8  km ) long footpath runs through the reserve and is  part of the Tully Trail , which links Jacobs Hill and Royalston Falls to other nearby Trustee reserves. The Tully Lake Campground, managed by the trustees, is also located on the lake . A 0.75 mi (1.2 km) forest road leads to Coddings Meadow .
