Brooks Woodland Preserve is a 693  acres (2.8  km² ) nature reserve near Petersham in the state of Massachusetts in the United States . It is managed by The Trustees of Reservations organization and is accessible free of charge.

history

Until the 19th century, the area that originally belonged to the Nipmuck Indians was used for agricultural purposes and was accordingly cleared . Today there is dense forest in the same place . The earlier use can still be guessed by the stone walls and paved paths.

The sanctuary was named after lawyer and diplomat James Willson Brooks, who during his lifetime reserved more than 2,000 acres (8.1 km²) of Petersham forest for nature and landscape protection. Today's Harvard Forest also belonged to this area .

The first parts of today's protected area were given to the trustees in 1975. Further donations followed in 1978, 1980, 1989, 1990 and 1999. In 1994, a further part was purchased.

Protected area

There are more than 13 mi (20.9  km ) of medium-difficulty hiking trails in the reserve,  accessible at various points in the city. The vegetation consists mainly of red oak , peasant oak , sugar maple , Canadian hemlock , Weymouth pine , red family , peacock hair fern and holly .

In the immediate vicinity is the Rutland Brook Sanctuary of the Massachusetts Audubon Society .
