Dolmetscher (also Der Dolmetscher , The Interpreter , Tlumočník , Tlmočník ) is a feature film by Martin Šulík from 2018 . The premiere of the Slovak - Czech - Austrian co-production with Jiří Menzel and Peter Simonischek in the leading roles took place on February 23, 2018 as part of the 68th Berlin International Film Festival , where the film was invited to the Berlinale Special section .

The Austrian theatrical release took place on June 22, 2018. In Germany, the film was released on November 22, 2018. The production was a Slovak candidate for the Oscars 2019 in the category of foreign-language best film selected .

The 80-year-old translator Ali Ungár, who lives in Slovakia, is confronted with the National Socialist past through a surprising find . He discovers the book of an SS officer who described his war experiences in Slovakia. Ali suspects that one of the chapters also writes about the execution of his parents. He decides to go to Vienna with a pistol to confront the alleged murderer of his parents and to seek revenge. There he only meets the 70-year-old Austrian and former teacher Georg Graubner, the son of Karl Graubner, the man who took part in the crimes during the Second World War .

Georg himself did not want to deal with his father and his past all his life. However, Ali awakens his interest with his concern, and so the two go on a journey and search for clues in Slovakia, where they look for witnesses who can tell about the time. While Georg, who suffers from an alcohol problem, wants to have fun there, Ali hopes to learn how his parents actually died. The knowledge they gain about the country, the past and themselves brings the two men closer to each other, but also to themselves.

One day Graubner finds Ungár lying unconscious on the floor in his hotel room. After Ungár was admitted to the hospital, Graubner returned to Vienna. In a room in his apartment, his father Karl, who, contrary to the original claim, is still alive, is lying in a nursing home bed, breathing heavily with an infusion and oxygen cannula . Graubner plays a video recording of an interview with a contemporary witness for his father, who reports on the atrocities of the time. Graubner had taken a copy of the recording with him from his trip. Georg puts Ungár's pistol on his father's bedside table and drives to the Calvary near Ružomberok , where a massacre had taken place at the time.

The shooting took place in April and May 2017 in Vienna and Slovakia. The production was supported by the Austrian Film Institute , the Vienna Film Fund , the Czech Cinematography Fund , CZ Film Incentives and the Slovak Audiovisual Fund . The Austrian broadcasting company , the Czech television company Česká televize and the Slovakian television Rozhlas a televízia Slovenska (RTVS) were involved. The film was produced by the Slovakian Titanic , co-producers were the Czech IN Film and the Austrian coop99 . Klaus Kellermann was responsible for the sound, Katarína Hollá for the costume design and František Lipták for the production design.

Verena Franke wrote in the Wiener Zeitung that the film would start humorously and with a certain ease. Seriousness would give way to humor as the film progressed. “It remains unclear whether this is intended due to the topic. Rather, it seems as if some of the scripts seem too constructed and bumpy. ”The film does not provide any answers, but would raise awareness, for example with statements and questions such as“ I don't feel guilty for something I haven't done ”and“ Is the son of a murderer better off than the son of a victim? "

Andrey Arnold found in the daily newspaper Die Presse that the film's stance was clear, but unfortunately also its dramaturgy. The surprises would be few and far between, the film would too rarely dare to stray from its foreseeable narrative path. Nevertheless, the relative seriousness with which the filmmakers take on the subject would please. And in the end, the film even has a twist in the quiver, and a final punch line that is almost brave for a film of this kind.
