The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e San Liberale of Castelfranco

The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta e San Liberale in Castelfranco Veneto was built in 1724–1746 according to plans by Francesco Maria Preti on the site of a Romanesque church and is an example of classical architecture. The statues in the small church square, Piazza San Liberale, were made by Orazio Marinali (1643–1720).

Location and naming

The cathedral is located in the fortified old town of Castelfranco, directly on the city wall. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and the holy liberal .

architecture

The cathedral is the main work of Pretis, the grave slab of which is in the nave. Preti demonstrated on him the theory of the harmonic mean , according to which z. B. the height of the nave is the harmonic mean between its length and width. The church building is inspired by Andrea Palladio 's simple formal language , as it is particularly evident at Il Redentore in Venice, and combined with classicist coolness. The cathedral has the plan of a Latin cross with a single nave and a dome over the crossing .

From 1892 to 1893 the facade was modified according to a design by Pio Finazzi . Two pairs of Doric half columns in colossal order based on high Säulenpostamenten are aufgesockelt, divide the dominant portico-like central projection of the facade into three parts and carry the architrave with triglyphs . Below is the Latin inscription in a tondo : MARIAE DN CAELO RECEPTAE AC D.LIBERALI PATR. It is crowned by a triangular pediment with three statues, the Virgin Mary and saints. The only opening is the entrance portal, which also ends with a simple triangular gable and is connected to the square by an outside staircase. The campanile made of brickwork with a crenellated wreath was originally a defensive tower on which a bell storey with round-arched sound openings was added.

Furnishing

There are numerous altars in the side aisles.

The Duomo houses works of art beyond the Pala di Castelfranco by Giorgione from the Cappella Costanzo of the original building.

The altarpiece of the high altar in the apse comes from the main altar of the previous building. It shows the descent of Christ into Limbo (1551) and is the work of Giovanni Battista Ponchini (1500–1570), a collaborator of Paolo Veronese . In the right apse is the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian of Palma il Giovane . The altar in the right transept with the depiction of the Assumption of Mary and the Saints Liberal and Johannes Nepomuk carried by clouds and angels comes from the sculptor Giuseppe Torretti (1694–1743), the teacher Antonio Canovas .

The martyrdom of St. Bartholomew by Antonio Zanchi can be seen on the first altar at the back left .

The sacristy on the left behind the apse houses an extensive picture gallery, which mainly contains pictures from Castelfrank churches that were profaned in the 19th century, among others. a. from the previous San Liberale building. Major works are Veronese works from the demolished Villa Soranzo.

  • seven fresco fragments (1551) by Paolo Veronese for the Villa Soranza Sanmichelis in S. Andrea Oltre il Muson, taken by Filippo Balbi in 1815 before the villa was demolished. These are images of Justitia (justice) and Temperantia ( moderation ) on the right wall and the ceiling fresco Tempo e Fama (time and glory).
