Life

Canfield earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Miami University in 1979 . He then studied at Yale University , where he received a Master of Philosophy (1984) and Ph.D. (1988) in geochemistry . Since 1982 he has held various positions as a research assistant at Yale University before he worked for NASA from 1988 to 1991 . During this time I also went abroad to Denmark . In addition, between 1993 and November 1996 he worked at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen . Since November 1st, 1996 he has been professor of ecology at the University of Odense, Denmark (since 1998 Syddansk Universitet ).

In addition, Canfield was director of the Nordic Center for Earth Evolution from 2005 to 2015 .

Canfield Ocean

Oxygen content over the history of the earth

According to Canfield, the band ores of the Precambrian were not formed by oxidation ( Great Oxygen Disaster ), but by reaction with sulfides . The Canfield Ocean was an anoxic ocean that existed between the Archean and Ediacarian and led to mass extinction .
