Church in Heiligenhagen

The village church of Heiligenhagen is a late medieval village church in Heiligenhagen , Satow municipality , in the Rostock district in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . The parish of Heiligenhagen belongs to the church region of Bad Doberan in the Rostock provost in the Mecklenburg parish of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany .

Building description

The village church of Heiligenhagen is a single-nave , Gothic church with a single -bay choir . The sacristy is located on the north side of the choir . A half-timbered building was built on the south side in 1766, which was previously used as a morgue . The western tower in front was built from wood in 1692.

History and equipment

Presumably on the site of an earlier Wende temple , the church was built around 1300, a few decades after Heiligenhagen was first mentioned .

Baptism angel

Baptism angel

A baptismal angel from the baroque era is attached under the vault of the choir . Originally the angel was lowered on a rope during baptism and the wreath he held took up the baptismal bowl. This is no longer possible today because of the old age of the figure and the baptismal bowl is on a brick base.

pulpit

pulpit

The pulpit dates from 1677 and thus from the time shortly after the end of the Thirty Years' War, which was devastating for Mecklenburg . The evangelists are depicted on four fields. The rise is younger and probably dates from the 18th century. In addition to three female figures depicted as half-portraits, he is adorned with the inscriptions Sermon the word, stop, be it at the right time or at the wrong time as a request to the priest, and watch and pray is always necessary for the community.

epitaph

Epitaph for Berndt von Bülow and Elisabeth Viereggen

A grave epitaph of Berndt von Bülow and his wife Elisabeth Viereggen, which was made after the death of Berndt von Bülow, is attached to the north side of the choir . The couple are shown with their six daughters and five sons. In addition to the father, two sons and a daughter wear a black cross over their heads, which indicates their earlier death. The family worships Jesus crucified. In the background you can see two riders approaching a city. The restoration of this panel was supported by the well-known descendant Vicco von Bülow , among others .

Painting

The painting from the time the church was built is striking. The shape of the cross vaults was emphasized with red paint . Wide-eyed heads and tongues outstretched were painted around the water holes in three corners of the nave . In the fourth corner, cobwebs were painted around the water holes. In the east cap of the vault in the nave, a Christ head is shown as a simple linear brush drawing. There is an interpretation that the grimaces are owls. According to Christian symbolism, Christ brings light to night animals as representatives of spiritual darkness. In addition, there are a large number of paw crosses in the choir and central nave . Currently covered and therefore not visible, scenic figurative representations have been preserved in six places in the nave.

Over this original layer of paint was a late Gothic painting in the choir vault, of which very small parts are now covered and preserved. Another baroque painting dates from around 1700. The walls of the choir room were provided with painted curtains. The ruffled folds with the depiction of light and shadow, as well as the depiction of the cords and idiots were striking. This layer of paint was also covered and preserved.

altar

The altar dates from around 1450. On the carved middle field of the winged altar there is a crescent moon Madonna , flanked by four saints. The two wings carry pictures of the four evangelists . From the Reformation to the restoration in 1995, the middle part was attached to a side wall of the church and instead a picture of Holy Communion shaped this part of the altar.
