The Piethen village church in the town of Southern Anhalt in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district in Saxony-Anhalt is a listed building and is listed as an architectural monument in the monument register with registration number 094 09394 .

location

In the center of the village of Piethen, the church stands south of the extinguishing water pond on a small hill. To the north of the church there is a war memorial for the First World War and a monument to the battle of the nations .

History and architecture

Since the place went from Emperor Otto to the Margrave of Meißen Thietmar I in 973 , an early Christianization can be assumed, especially since Piethen belonged to the possessions of the Nienburg monastery 50 years later . It is not possible to determine exactly when the first church was built. A church is not mentioned until the late 14th century. In the Middle Ages Piethen belonged to the Archdiocese of Magdeburg . The situation has shifted several times since the Reformation and today the church is part of the regional parish in Wörbzig in the Köthen parish of the Evangelical Church in Anhalt .

In its current form, the church is largely shaped by a renovation in 1909, which Friedrich Gothe designed and which - like the new buildings in Gnetsch and Köthen - can be assigned to Art Nouveau . In November 2010 it was Church of the Month of the Foundation for the Preservation of Church Monuments in Germany because its existence was in danger. New ideas for use such as equestrian weddings should help to preserve the church. The core of the structure probably dates from the 13th century, while the tower to the northwest of the nave and the sacristy were created during the renovation in 1909. Various elements such as arched windows , sound hatches , ox eyes , bat dormers , the aedicula portal , a semicircular stair tower or even that The hipped roof on the tower gives the church a varied appearance.

Interior and outfit

Inside the church, Art Nouveau furnishings have remained largely unchanged. The room is spanned by a wooden flat ceiling, while the choir is vaulted. In the west there is an L-shaped singing and organ gallery.
